Corn gluten meal is a natural corn by-product which has historically been sold as animal feed.  It is a common ingredient in many dry pet foods (the ORGANIC).  University researchers discovered that amino acid chains abundant in this material prevent the secondary roots from developing properly in germinating seeds.  Therefore, it provides pre-emergent weed-control (the WEED-STOPPER).  It is effective with preventing germination on all kinds of seeds (it is non-selective).  This means that it will also prevent germination of grass seeds, flower seeds, etc.  So, wait about six weeks after application to start desired seeds in the area you use corn gluten meal.  It will not interfere with the development of newly planted bulbs or other starts you want to transplant in your garden.

Corn gluten meal is ten percent slow release nitrogen by weight (the PLUS) to nourish the soil (feed hungry soil organisms). They will transform the nitrogen into forms that plants can utilize to grow.  So, it will feed any existing plant (weed or otherwise).  It will be effective in controlling germination for about six to eight weeks.

APPLICATION RATE: Two (2) pounds per 100 square feet. 

SPREADER SETTING:  Measure your lawn area.  Fill your spreader with the amount of fertilizer needed to cover the area.  Set your spreader's setting in the middle setting and walk back and forth across the area until the spreader hopper is empty.  For example, if you wish to feed at the rate of 20 pounds per thousand square feet, measure an area 20 feet by 50 feet and fill your spreader with 20 pounds of fertilizer. 

DIRECTIONS:  Apply two weeks before target seeds are germinating.  There are biological indicators that are helpful in determining when to apply.  In the Spring, the first flowers on Forsythia and blooming Tulips (those 20' away from building foundations) signal that soil temperatures are at ideal level for germinating seeds.  In this part of the country, we typical have a mini-drought in August.  As soon as the "drought" breaks , apply OWSP.  Remember this...lots of weeds germinate six or more months of the year...so maintenance applications will usually pay off with the reward of less weeds.
